A Senate panel approved the nomination of Karla Gilbride as the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s head attorney.
In 12-10 vote, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed Gilbride’s nomination out of committee with less than a month left in the legislative session. The sole Republican to vote in favor of Gilbride was Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).
Gilbride, an attorney at Public Justice, was nominated by President Joe Biden in June. The EEOC’s general counsel post has been vacant since March 2021, when Biden fired Trump-appointed Sharon Gustafson. Career staff have been leading the agency’s legal department.
