The Biden administration will expand legal pathways for immigrants to the US, stiffen border enforcement, and open regional processing centers in Latin America to try to dissuade US-Mexico border crossings.

Senior administration officials outlined the approach Thursday, two weeks ahead of the planned expiration of the pandemic-era border restriction Title 42. Parts of the plan are likely to draw legal challenges and criticism from both border hawks and immigrants’ rights advocates.
