A “ban the box” policy protecting job applicants with a criminal record would be expanded to cover the entire federal government and contractors under legislation cleared for the president.
The policy is referred to as “ban the box” because it would bar job application forms from including a box or section where applicants must disclose their history of arrests, criminal charges, and sentences. In most cases, covered employers couldn’t ask applicants for their criminal history until a conditional job offer is made.
