Austin, Texas, Sued by Businesses Seeking to Stop Sick Leave Law

A new Austin, Texas, ordinance that requires employers in the city to provide sick leave for employees is pre-empted by a state law, according to a lawsuit filed by a coalition of business associations and temporary staffing businesses.

Austin became the first Texas city to require paid sick leave when it enacted the ordinance in February. It requires employers to grant one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, with limits on how much an employee may accrue that vary depending on employer size and whether it’s a unionized workplace with a collective bargaining agreement.
