App-Based Drivers Would Stay Contractors Under Calif. Measure

An industry-funded campaign has filed a ballot measure to exempt app-based drivers from California’s new law making it harder for firms to classify workers as independent contractors, the campaign announced Oct. 29.

The ballot measure would preserve app-based drivers’ independent contractor status while providing enhanced driver benefits, including a wage floor and a health-care stipend.

Uber Technologies Inc., Lyft Inc., and DoorDash Inc. have contributed $90 million to fund the ballot measure, Brandon Castillo, spokesman for the Protect App-Based Drivers & Services campaign, said at a press conference.
