Amazon’s Quotas for Warehouse Labor Targeted in New York Law (1)

Amazon.com Inc. and other large warehouse operators in New York State face new limits on the quota systems they can use to spur worker productivity, under legislation Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law.

The measure, S. 8922, is similar to a first-of-its-kind warehouse worker safety law that California enacted in 2021. The New York law is aimed at requiring more transparency in warehouse-worker quota systems—such as the systems state legislators have said Amazon uses—and discouraging overly demanding quotas that worker advocates say contribute to higher-than-average injury rates and prevent workers from taking legally protected breaks.
