Amazon Loses Driver Classification Fight at Wisconsin High Court

Amazon Logistics Inc. lost its bid for the Wisconsin Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling that a group of drivers who deliver packages for the company are employees rather than independent contractors.

The decision issued Tuesday means the Amazon subsidiary could be on the hook for more than $200,000 in delinquent taxes to Wisconsin’s unemployment insurance fund.

The state Department of Workforce Development uncovered the debt following an audit of the services performed by more than 1,000 Amazon Logistics delivery partners during portions of 2016, 2017, and 2018.
