Amazon Appears to Be Joint Employer of Drivers, Senators Say (1)

A bipartisan group of senators is scrutinizing Amazon.com Inc.'s relationship with delivery drivers, claiming the tech giant is a joint employer of the workers in part due to its artificial intelligence-based surveillance practices.

A letter dated Thursday from the lawmakers to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy focused on the company’s Delivery Service Partner Program, which they said may have serious shortcomings on workers’ rights and safety.

The company contracts out delivery drivers through the program, but the lawmakers say Amazon is exerting enough control over the drivers’ wages and working conditions that it “seems clear that a joint employer relationship exists.” ...
