Alro Steel Fends Off Certified Collective in Federal Wage Case

Alro Steel Corp. convinced a Wisconsin federal judge to deny conditional certification of a Fair Labor Standards Act collective action brought by a former employee seeking unpaid wages on behalf of 1,500 other workers.

Iran Amandah, a steel-cutting machine operator, alleged that he was required to arrive 15 minutes early to the Alro warehouse in Wauwatosa, Wis., to change into his uniform and protective gear before attending daily pre-shift meetings. He says that he and other employees weren’t compensated for that time, because Alro automatically rounded their clock-in times to their scheduled shift times.
