Alaska Takes Over Key Part of State Workers’ Union Dues Process

Alaska’s unionized state employees can stop paying dues under an administrative order the governor says is needed to comply with a landmark U.S. Supreme Court union financing decision.

State workers’ authorizations to have dues deducted from their paychecks will be voided in December, under the state’s timeline. The workers then can choose whether to pay dues to their unions through a system administered by the state rather than unions, according to the Sept. 26 administrative order issued by Republican Gov. Michael Dunleavy.
