AFL-CIO Tells Washington to Stay Out of Brewing Seaport Dispute

The AFL-CIO urged President Joe Biden and Congressional lawmakers to stay out of a labor dispute that could shutter East Coast ports next week.

Liz Shuler, the federation’s president, admonished Republican lawmakers in a letter Wednesday for asking Biden to step in. But the message was clearly directed at the president himself, too, as he faces a major economic disruption less than two months before the presidential election.

In the letter, Shuler said even the suggestion of intervention from the White House would make it harder for the International Longshoremen’s Association and port operators to hammer out a deal.
