Adjuncts Report Low Wages, Expectations To Work Off the Clock, SEIU Surveys Shows

More than four in 10 adjunct professors are paid less than $15 per hour, while more than half say they’ve been asked or expected to perform unpaid job duties, Service Employees International Union reported Nov. 15 in a survey of about 460 part-time faculty.

The study illustrates an occupation that routinely requires hours of preparation outside of the classroom—but minus the financial incentives offered to full-time professors. The report, “Crisis at the Boiling Point: A Documentary Look at Adjunct Workplace Abuse and Recommendations for Federal Policy Change,” is part of SEIU’s Adjunct Action national organizing campaign.
