US Business Rebukes French for 15% Digital Services Tax Proposal

France’s proposal to raise a tax on big tech companies to 15% from 3% escalates the unfair treatment of American companies in the global market, US business groups said Friday.

The nation’s unilateral digital services tax “drags on the country’s job creation and technological progress,” John Murphy, senior vice president and head of international at the US Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement Friday.

Further, he said the new proposal “appears to exclusively target U.S. companies, which will likely spur retaliation impacting the broader French economy. Cooler heads must prevail.”
