Norway to Auction Fish Permits Left Unsold After Tax Debacle

The Norwegian government will offer up for sale the additional salmon farming capacity that went unsold after the country’s biggest aquaculture companies, incensed by a contentious tax proposal, snubbed an October auction for licenses.

The Nordic nation plans to take closed bids in September for 8,243 metric tons of maximum permitted biomass, according to a proposal from the Trade, Industry and Fisheries Ministry. The ministry is seeking comments on a proposal for the design of an auction for the remaining capacity from the 2022 allocation round.
