Carbon Tax ‘Cornerstone’ of Irish Climate Policy, Official Says

Carbon taxes have been the “key policy lever” to disincentivize the use of fossil fuels in Ireland, according to a finance official.

Ireland’s carbon tax has been “the cornerstone of our climate policy over the past number of years,” Clare Costello, the assistant secretary at Ireland’s finance ministry, said Friday at the Irish Tax Institute’s Global Tax Policy Conference in Dublin

She primarily highlighted the country’s initial tax on petrol and diesel since 2009, which was extended to other liquid fuels and natural gas in 2010, and solid fuels in 2013.
