Angola, Uganda Weigh Launching Central Bank Digital Currencies

Two African nations say they are considering opportunities being presented by digital currencies, as demand for the coins picks up on the continent.

  • “We are now looking and trying to understand the objectives for support of the CBDC, the design options, what is the role of the central bank, what role will financial institutions have to play, monetary policy implications; do you pay interest on it,” Michael Atingi-Ego, Deputy Governor at the Bank of Uganda, says at conference in Washington DC
