The Trump administration is eliminating deportation protections for more than 12,000 immigrants from Nepal, the Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday.
A Temporary Protected Status designation for the country will terminate effective Aug. 5, according to a Federal Register notice released by the agency.
TPS allows immigrants from designated countries without another legal status to stay in the US for up to 18 months and get legal work authorization when circumstances like armed conflict prevent a safe return.
In a review of conditions in Nepal, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem found notable improvements in environmental disaster preparedness and substantial reconstruction from a 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people, according to the agency.
The Trump administration has targeted temporary immigrant relief programs for rollbacks, previously terminating designations for Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Cameroon.
