North Carolina Governor Signs Covid-19 Liability Protection Bill

North Carolina businesses will be shielded from lawsuits if their employees or customers contract the coronavirus, under a bill signed Thursday by Gov. Roy Cooper.

The measure (H.B. 118) covers companies, government agencies, and other groups sued by someone who contracts Covid-19. Business groups had backed the legislation, saying protections were needed as companies reopen and lawsuits increase nationwide.

  • Businesses are required to provide “reasonable” notice of actions they have taken to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus on their premises, but they won’t be held accountable if workers or customers don’t comply.
