Grand Canyon University Covid-19 Refund Suit Denied Class Status

A student suing Grand Canyon University over Covid-19 disruption refunds for housing expenses, meal plan costs, and campus fees collected for the Spring 2020 semester lost his bid for class certification, after a federal court in Arizona said the would-be class was overly broad.

When certifying a class, courts must ensure the definition doesn’t capture uninjured parties, and here the proposed class would have included anyone who paid tuition on behalf of a student, Judge Susan M. Brnovich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona said.
