A Look at Pfizer’s Ultra-Cold Vaccine Shipping Boxes: Graphic

December 8, 2020, 6:29 PM UTC

As the coronavirus rages around the world, Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE face a major challenge in delivering its vaccine. The vaccine needs to be kept in ultra-cold storage at around minus-94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-70 Celsius). To accomplish this, the companies have developed a shipping container packed with dry ice that will maintain the temperature during transit. Administration sites with freezers can store the vaccines for six months; sites without freezers can keep vials in the shipping boxes for up to 15 days if the dry ice is replenished.
