California Governor Signs Gas Tax Hike to Build Roads

Sales and excise taxes on gasoline will increase Nov. 1 to fund transportation and infrastructure projects under a bill signed April 28 by California Gov. Jerry Brown (D).

S.B. 1 combines the tax increases with new fees on vehicle registrations to raise $5 billion a year. The revenue will be split between state and local projects.

Brown already signed a companion measure, A.C.A. 5, which would amend the state constitution to block the Legislature from taking the funds for other uses. Voters will be asked to approve the constitutional amendment on a 2018 statewide ballot.
