Volkswagen, Audi Drivers Urge Nod for $42 Million Airbag Deal

Volkswagen and Audi drivers asked a federal court Wednesday for early approval of a class settlement providing $42 million and an outreach program designed to accelerate airbag replacement in some 1.35 million vehicles with recalled Takata airbags.

The plaintiffs sued Volkswagen Group of America Inc. and Audi of America LLC, alleging their vehicles were equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators that could malfunction, sending shards of metal into drivers and passengers during accidents.

The litigation, alleging the flawed airbags reduced the value of their vehicles, was part of a combined multidistrict proceeding against numerous automakers and Takata Corp.
