Verizon $4M Robocalling Class Deal Gets Initial OK

Verizon Wireless LLC Jan. 28 won preliminary approval of a $4 million deal to resolve class allegations that its debt collector—Collecto Inc.—made automated phone calls to people who were never Verizon subscribers (Lofton v. Verizon Wireless (VAW) LLC, N.D. Cal., 4:13-cv-05665-YGR, 1/28/16).

According to the complaint, while trying to contact former Verizon subscribers, Collecto called non-Verizon subscribers. The plaintiffs alleged that Collecto made these phone calls using automated telephone dialing systems, and that Verizon is vicariously liable under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, 47 U.S.C. § 227.
