Unilever Says Suave Users Failed to Show Product Had Benzene

Unilever consumers’ failure to allege that the specific spray antiperspirant products they bought were tainted with benzene dooms their proposed class suit, the company told a federal court in Illinois.

Yvonne Barnes and Patricia Dean allege that Unilever U.S. Inc. didn’t disclose benzene in the Suave 24 Hour Protection Powder aerosol antiperspirant they bought, causing them to overpay.

The litigation followed a citizen petition by independent testing lab Valisure, which asked the Food and Drug Administration Nov. 3, 2021, to recall numerous spray antiperspirant and deodorant products in which some batches were found to contain elevated levels of benzene, a ...
