The New York Times agreed to pay $1.6 million and to provide $3.9 million worth of free access codes to resolve allegations that its auto-renewing subscriptions violated California law, according to a motion for preliminary approval of the proposed settlement filed in Manhattan federal court.
NYT also agreed to “revise the presentation and wording of the automatic renewal terms in its mobile and desktop platforms,” and in direct mail offers, to comply with California’s requirements. It will also provide “subscribers with an acknowledgment that includes the automatic renewal terms, cancellation policy, and information regarding how to cancel,” the Tuesday motion ...
