New York City will pay $12.5 million to settle class action claims by thousands of visitors to city correctional facilities who were subjected to strip searches and body cavity searches.
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Monday gave final approval of the agreement reached June 20, 2019, which which includes an injunction against improper searches.
Judge Richard M. Berman said the Department of Corrections has shown it has put an end to the invasive searches, and plaintiffs’ counsel has had an opportunity to verify its compliance.
