Online legal services company LegalZoom.com Inc. and the law firm referral company Legal HelpLine sent unsolicited commercial text messages to potential legal clients, according to a federal complaint seeking class status filed Sept. 15 (Tunit v. Legal Helpline, D.N.J., No. 2:17-cv-07133, class complaint filed 9/15/17).
Robocall lawsuits have proliferated as the technology to send automatic telemarketing calls and texts has come into widespread use. But many of the suits challenging robocalls under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act have been stayed until a federal court decides what kinds of automated dialer systems are covered by federal telemarketing law.
