Global Tel-Link to Pay $25 Million in Pricey Prison Calls Case

Inmates in New Jersey who say they were overcharged for phone calls for over a decade got final approval Thursday of a class settlement that calls for Global Tel-Link to pay $25 million.

The prisoners sued GTL in August 2013 alleging violations of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, the Federal Communications Act, the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment, and other causes of action. The plaintiffs, including inmates and those who called them, alleged excessive phone charges that totaled $150 million.
