Fresh Direct to Pay $900,000 Over Applicants’ Criminal Screening

Fresh Direct LLC will retain a hiring consultant and pay $900,000 to settle class claims that it violated race and criminal-history bias laws by categorically rejecting applicants with certain types of criminal records, the would-be class representatives told a federal court in New York.

About 778 class members have been identified so far, Vidal Soler and Corey Stewart said Wednesday when asking the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for preliminary approval of the deal. If all participate, each would get $1,156 less fees, costs, and other deductions, Soler and Stewart said.
