Facebook Inc. failed to convince the Northern District of California Sept. 9 to toss the bulk of consumer claims that it collected their data—including videos, photos, and political beliefs—and then shared it with third parties without permission.

Social media users have a legitimate interest in information they make available to their friends and invasion of that privacy right alone gives them standing to sue, Judge Vince Chhabria wrote for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
