Virginia Lawmakers Vote to Legalize Recreational Cannabis

Virginians could legally grow cannabis and the state could collect millions in taxes under a proposal the legislature passed Wednesday.

The measure (S.B. 1406/H.B. 2312) headed for the desk of Gov. Ralph Northam (D) would make Virginia the 17th state to say yes to recreational marijuana. Possessing an ounce or less would become legal July 1, and licensed retrail sales would begin after Jan. 1, 2024. Northam has said he supports legalization.
