State Workers’ Return to Office Delayed

Tens of thousands of California employees were expected to return to the office today. But after a series of eleventh-hour deals between the state and worker unions, those offices will remain vacant a bit longer.

“Nearly all” of the 100,000 state workers who were expected to be subject to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s contested four-day return-to-office order will be exempt from the mandate, the state acknowledged on Monday. At least about 115,000 of the state’s roughly 224,000 full-time workers are now shielded by deals delaying the executive order until July 1, 2026.
