San Francisco Schools Shut for 48,000 Students on Teacher Strike

San Francisco’s public schools are closed Monday for about 48,000 students as city teachers go on strike for the first time since 1979.

Teachers are seeking a 9% raise over two years, fully funded family health care, more staff and smaller classes — demands that the school district says are unaffordable. Members of the United Educators of San Francisco, which represents educators, nurses, counselors and psychologists, had voted almost 98% to authorize the strike.
