California Rep. Kevin Kiley is attempting a rare political maneuver — ditching his Republican Party affiliation to run as an independent in a redrawn district that heavily favors Democrats, Greg Giroux reports.
The 41-year-old Harvard- and Yale-educated lawyer became one of several Republicans targeted under California Democrats’ new congressional map. His suburban Sacramento 3rd District was dismantled, prompting him to compete instead in the neighboring 6th District, where Trump would have lost by over 8 percentage points in 2024.
