Noem’s ‘Racist’ Words Give 9th Cir. Pause on TPS

The Trump administration is asking a federal appeals panel to overturn a lower court’s injunction that blocked it from rescinding the protected status of some 350,000 Venezuelan immigrants. But the panel signaled Wednesday that federal officials’ “arguably racist” comments could get in the way, Isaiah Poritz reports.

The Temporary Protected Status program allows immigrants from certain countries to legally stay in the US and work for up to 18 months when it’s unsafe to return to their home country due to armed conflicts or natural disasters. US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has argued TPS shouldn’t protect Venezuelans.
