Meta Fails in Early Bid to Nix Patent in Quest VR Headsets Suit

Meta Platforms Inc. lost an early attempt to invalidate a patent its Quest virtual-reality headsets are accused of infringing, as a federal judge said it was too soon to decide whether it’s abstract.

Judge David O. Carter denied Meta’s motion for judgment on the pleadings, finding it was premature to resolve whether Perceptix Technologies LLC’s US Patent No. 8,498,439 is patent-eligible at this stage, according to an order docketed Thursday in the US District Court for the Central District of California. Meta may renew its challenge after the court defines the patent’s key terms, the judge said.
