LA, SF Hubs Crucial to California High-Speed Rail, Agency Says

The California High-Speed Rail Authority expects to begin passenger service on the Central Valley segment of its long-delayed San Francisco-to-Los Angeles line by 2032, at least a year earlier than a previous Inspector General report estimated, according to a new agency review.

However, the system will only be financially sustainable if the 171-mile Central Valley line is extended north to the Bay Area or south toward Los Angeles County, the report said. That will require stable state funding, new powers to overcome utility disputes, and private-sector participation, CHSRA officials said.
