The AI industry’s hotly anticipated legal showdown between Elon Musk and Sam Altman kicks off next week in federal court in Oakland.

The first challenge won’t be sorting through OpenAI’s founding principles or the billions at stake. It’ll be finding a nine-person jury that can plausibly claim to be fair and impartial in a dispute between two of the country’s most famous, polarizing, and powerful figures.

That’s no easy task. Both men come with heavy political and personal baggage, and broader public distrust of the AI industry hangs over the case as well.
