Democrat Eric Swalwell said he plans to resign from his congressional seat, days after a series of sexual assault allegations prompted him to abandon a once-promising campaign for governor of California.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said in a post on X on Monday announcing his intent to resign. He vowed to “fight the serious, false allegations made against me,” but also said he “must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
