California lawmakers are again eyeing new rules around data centers that power artificial intelligence after Silicon Valley opposition squashed their efforts this year.
Democratic legislators said they will continue to press proposals next year that would grant oversight over water and electricity usage by the more than 300 data centers operating in the state. They are driven by concerns over how data centers impact their constituents who pay some of the nation’s highest electricity rates.
“Powering data centers can’t come at the cost of powering homes,” Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D) told Bloomberg Government.
