Gavin Newsom has embarked on a fight with major stakes for the US government — not to mention his own political future. Standing in his way is a bow-tie-wearing physicist who loves classicalJapanese poetry and is heir to a Berkshire Hathaway fortune.

Charles Munger Jr., son of the late billionaire investor Charles Munger, has already poured $30 million into opposing the California governor’s efforts to revamp the state’s congressional districts in favor of Democrats. He’s flooded airwaves and mailboxes with ads urging residents to reject the proposal in a special Nov. 4 vote.
