Wake Up Call: Volkswagen North America Gets a New Legal Chief

  • Volkswagen Group of America Inc., the North American subsidiary of the German auto giant, announced that deputy general counsel for product liability and regulatory affairs Antony “Tony” Klapper has been promoted to general counsel. Klapper, a former Kirkland & Ellis and Reed Smith partner who succeeds Stephan Halstrup in the role, will help the company “navigate an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment.” (Volkswagen)
  • Sullivan & Cromwell litigation partner Brian Glueckstein has billed more than 4,000 hours in the nearly two-year-old bankruptcy of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, helping the Wall Street firm’s legal fees as debtor’s counsel in the Chapter 11 case grow to nearly $200 million. (Reuters)
  • MLT Aikins, a large Winnipeg-based firm with offices throughout Western Canada, has agreed to combine as of Sept. 1 with Edmonton’s Hillenbrand Kozicki. The latter specializes in real estate and development law. (MLT)
  • Chinese legal giant Grandall has expanded beyond its Beijing base by opening an office in Madrid and establishing a presence in Malaysia via an alliance with Richard Wee Chambers in Kuala Lumpur. Grandall now has six offices outside of mainland China. (Law.com International)

  • Gillian Deutch has joined Venable as a partner in the real estate finance group in the New York office.
  • James Looby joined Vedder Price as a shareholder in the labor and employment practice in the Chicago office. He joins from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
