Wake Up Call: Lawyers in Trump Cases Seek to Recoup Legal Fees

  • Appellate lawyer Paul Clement and Jenner & Block are asking a US judge to award more than $529,000 in fees in a lawsuit they brought on behalf of the Association of American Universities against the Defense Department. The lawyers are asking for the fees under the 1980 Equal Access to Justice Act, which allows individuals and small organizations to recover limited legal fees from the federal government if they win a final judgment in their case and the government’s position was not “substantially ‌justified.” (Reuters)
  • Detroit attorney Barton Morris is working to help non-violent felons in Michigan regain their firearm rights despite state laws that permanently prohibit them from owning guns. He says the effort could open the door for millions of Americans and is already advising clients through the process. (CBS News)
  • The chair of the McGill Law Faculty Advisory Board resigned following a student referendum endorsing an academic boycott of Israeli educational institutions. Jonathan Amiel, who was also a course lecturer, told the school’s dean that he was no longer willing or able to participate in his formal roles or willing to fundraise on behalf of the faculty.
