Wake Up Call: Holland & Knight Names New Executive Partner for Boston Office

  • Holland & Knight named real estate partner Diane McDermott the new executive partner of its Boston office, which has more than 220 lawyers and staff. McDermott is co-chair of Holland & Knight’s national retail development and lending team and member of its real estate and hospitality industry group leadership team. She succeeds Steven Wright, who recently left the firm to join the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston as senior vice president and general counsel. (HKlaw.com)

  • The National Association of Women Lawyers said certain conservative Republican senators “improperly used” objections to sink the nomination of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jessie Liu, as President Donald Trump’s pick to be the Justice Department’s No. 3 attorney. (Law.com)

  • Liu, a former litigation partner at Morrison Foerster and Jenner & Block, would have been in charge of DOJ civil litigation. But she withdrew after Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they were concerned about her membership in the National Association of Women Lawyers, its support for abortion rights and opposition to the nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court. Advocates said Liu’s experience might cause women and minority attorneys to think twice about joining identity-based organizations. (BLAW)

  • The San Francisco Chronicle reported last week that Cravath, Swaine & Moore made $75.7 million in fees from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in the year before the utility declared bankruptcy this January, the lion’s share of the at least $84 million that PG&E paid out to four outside firms during that period. Weil, Gotshal & Manges got $4.7 million; and Jenner & Block, $3.57 million, of that amount, the Chronicle reported. (SFChronicle.com)
