Wake Up Call: George Floyd Lawyer to Represent Renée Good Family

Jan. 15, 2026, 12:22 PM UTC

Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.

  • Renée Good’s family hired civil rights attorney Antonio Romanucci of Chicago-based law firm Romanucci & Blandin—who represented George Floyd’s relatives—to pursue claims against federal officials after the 37-year-old was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. Romanucci said his firm will conduct a civil investigation and potentially file claims against ICE, the federal government, and other responsible parties, despite what he described as the “byzantine” and difficult process of suing federal authorities. (The Washington Post)
  • The Pentagon is preparing to send military lawyers to Minneapolis to assist federal prosecutors amid an intensified immigration enforcement crackdown. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the services to identify 40 JAG officers, from which 25 will be selected to serve as special assistant US attorneys. (CNN)
  • Oregon’s top government lawyers are facing criticism for what political leaders say is deeply flawed and misleading draft of ballot language for two proposed open-primary measures. Internal emails show that Steve Berman, the attorney general’s special counsel, said he lacked time to fully review the drafts before they were released, while senior assistant AG Greg Rios acknowledged he largely copied language from older, defeated measures.
