Wake Up Call: Big Law Steers Investments in Metaverse Projects

  • Leading off, Cleary Gottlieb is advising Tokyo-based Sony Group Corporation on its $1 billion investment in Epic Games Inc., maker of Fortnite, in a funding round aimed at advancing Epic’s plan to build in the metaverse virtual platform. Kirkbi, a Denmark-based holding and investment company that owns The LEGO Group, is also investing $1 billion into Cary, North Carolina-based Epic. The company, valued at $31.5 billion after the investment, said it’s being advised by Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. A spokesman for Kirkbi said the company was advised by a U.S.-based firm, but it declined to name it. (Cleary)
  • O’Melveny & Myers said it’s counseling ReKTGlobal Inc, a New York-based esports startup, on its $470 million acquisition by metaverse development company Infinite Reality LLC. Infinite Reality reportedly plans to expand ReKTGlobal’s brands into the metaverse, including by creating esports stadiums and skyboxes. (OMM.com)
