Vetoed California AI Bill Renews Pressure for Congress to Act

Tanked legislation in California that would have imposed safety requirements on artificial intelligence companies has renewed calls for Congress to regulate the technology.

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a controversial bill, known as SB 1047, this week following fierce opposition from the technology industry, including OpenAI Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., prominent AI researchers, and—unusually—members of the US Congress.
