US Sanctions Brazil Supreme Court Judge Over Bolsonaro Case (2)

The US imposed sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, escalating its targeting of the judge overseeing legal probes into whether former President Jair Bolsonaro attempted a coup after his 2022 election defeat.

The sanctions are under the Global Magnitsky Designation, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced Wednesday.

President Donald Trump has steadily ramped up pressure on Brazil in recent weeks, threatening to impose 50% tariffs on the country over what he described as a “witch hunt” spearheaded by Moraes against Bolsonaro. The US also revoked Moraes’ visa earlier this month.
