United Behavioral Health Sued Over Wilderness Therapy Coverage

United Behavioral Health was hit with a proposed class action saying it wrongly refuses to cover wilderness therapy programs on the grounds that they’re experimental or unproven.

The lawsuit, filed by a health plan participant whose daughter received mental health treatments at a wilderness therapy program, says these programs have increasingly been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with certain mental and behavioral needs.

Wilderness therapy programs seek to treat young people with behavioral or substance abuse issues by combining traditional therapy methods with outdoor activities such as hiking and camping.
