Uber Buys Data Labeling Startup in Push to Sell AI Services

Uber Technologies Inc. has bought Belgian startup Segments.ai as the ride-hailing company seeks to expand its nascent data-labeling business.

Bert De Brabandere and Otto Debals, the founders of Y Combinator-backed Segments.ai, and its staff will join the rideshare giant under its data-labeling unit, Uber AI Solutions, according to a LinkedIn post from the San Francisco-based company.

An Uber spokesperson declined to comment on the deal size. The US Securities and Exchange Commission does not require financial disclosures on acquisitions if the amount is not significant.
